RWI’s are spread by swallowing, breathing, or having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools, spas, splash pads, and other recreational water features. Recreational water can become contaminated with microscopic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, or protozoa directly from patrons or from other environmental sources (air, soil, water, animals). The most common casual affects of illness associated with aquatic facilities are: Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Escherichia coli, Norovirus, Adenovirus and Hepatitis A.

Marshall County has approximately 30 pools, spas, beaches, and other recreational water facilities. These facilities are owned and operated by clubs, camps, parks, hotels or other similar entities. The Public Facilities Program works to prevent recreational water illnesses and injury at all facilities/areas through required operator certification and regulatory enforcement. All aquatic facilities/areas are inspected and monitored monthly to ensure water quality.

Important links related to aquatic facilities

Kentucky Public Swimming Pools and Bathing Facilities Inspection Program

Hotel/Motel Program

Marshall County has approximately 35 hotels and motels that are inspected a minimum of once per year.

Hotel and Motel Facilities

Boarding Homes Program

The Boarding Home Law (KRS 216B.300 thru 216B.320 and 216B.990) and the Boarding Home Regulation (902 KAR 20:350), requires registration of any home, facility, institution, lodging, or other establishment, however named, which accommodates three or more adults not related by blood or marriage to the owner, operator, or manager, and which offers or holds itself out to offer room and board on a twenty-four (24) hour basis for hire or compensation.

The Food Safety Branch provides regulatory oversight for Boarding Homes.
